Muscle Strains
What Is a Muscle Strain?
A muscle strain, sometimes called a muscle pull or tear can happen when a muscle or the tendon attaching it to bone is overstretched or torn. Strains range from a mild overstretch to a partial or complete tear of the muscle fibers, and can also damage small blood vessels nearby, leading to bruising, swelling, and pain.
Common Symptoms
- Sudden, sharp pain at the time of injury
- Muscle weakness or difficulty using the affected area
- Swelling, bruising, or tenderness
- Muscle spasms or cramping
- Limited range of motion
What Causes It
Muscle strains are common in athletes and active New Yorkers, often from lifting, sudden twisting movements, or overexertion without a proper warm-up. They also happen during everyday activities such as an awkward reach, a slip, or overuse from repetitive motion at work or the gym.
How We Diagnose and Treat Muscle Strains
Dr. Kumar starts with a physical exam to assess the severity and location of the strain, using on-site digital X-rays when needed to rule out fracture or more serious injury. From there, treatment typically combines:
- Soft tissue and joint mobilization to reduce muscle tightness and restore movement
- Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation or Therapeutic ultrasound to manage pain and inflammation
- Physical therapy exercises to rebuild strength and prevent re-injury
- Medical massage to relieve tension in the surrounding muscles
Most mild to moderate strains respond well to conservative care, and we'll build a treatment timeline based on how severe the strain is.
